Behavioral / STAR

Structure every behavioral answer as STAR and keep it ~2 minutes.

The STAR method

  • Situation — brief context (1–2 sentences).
  • Task — your specific responsibility/goal.
  • Action — what you did (say "I", not "we"); the bulk of the answer.
  • Result — the outcome; quantify it (latency, %, time saved, incidents avoided).

Prepare stories for these themes

Have 5–6 flexible stories you can adapt: - A hard technical problem you solved. - A production incident / bug you diagnosed and fixed. - Ownership — something you drove end-to-end. - Conflict / disagreement and how you resolved it. - Delivering under time pressure / ambiguity. - A mistake you made — and what you changed afterward (accountability). - Leadership / mentoring / collaboration.

Common questions

  • "Tell me about yourself" — 60–90s: role → strengths → why this role.
  • "Tell me about a challenging project."
  • "A time you disagreed with a teammate/manager."
  • "A time you failed / a mistake."
  • "How do you handle tight deadlines / competing priorities?"
  • "Why do you want this role / leave your current one?" (stay positive).

Tips

  • Lead with impact, then explain how.
  • Quantify wherever possible; be specific, not generic.
  • Own your part clearly; give credit without hiding your contribution.
  • For failures, emphasize the fix + prevention, not blame.
  • Prepare questions to ask the interviewer (team, challenges, success metrics).
